Money, ATMs & Tipping in Phuket

Carry baht for markets and small shops; cards widely accepted at hotels and malls.

Money, ATMs & Tipping in Phuket

Overview

Thailand uses the baht (THB). ATMs are common in Patong, shopping malls and Phuket Town, and most accept international cards with a local fee. Notify your bank before travel and consider a travel card with low foreign fees.

Hotels, larger restaurants and tour desks accept Visa and Mastercard. Street food and markets are cash-only. Exchange money at banks or booths with clear rates rather than beach traders.

Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. Round up taxi fares, leave small change at cafes, and 50–100 THB for good restaurant service. Some upscale venues add a service charge.

Key Tips

  • Notify your bank before travelling
  • Keep some small notes for temples and tips
  • ATMs charge a local fee (often 220 THB)
  • USD is not commonly accepted day to day
