Thai Etiquette & Culture Basics

Show respect at temples, avoid touching heads, and learn a few Thai phrases.

Thai Etiquette & Culture Basics

Overview

Thais value politeness and calm. A smile and slow tone go far. The wai greeting (palms together, slight bow) is appreciated, especially with elders. Feet are considered low; do not point them at people or Buddha images.

Remove shoes before entering homes and temple buildings. Dress modestly at religious sites. Public displays of affection are milder than in Australia. The monarchy is deeply respected; avoid insensitive comments.

Learning hello (sawasdee) and thank you (khop khun) delights locals. Haggling is fine at markets but not in malls or restaurants.

Key Tips

  • Remove shoes at temples and homes
  • Cover shoulders and knees at sacred sites
  • Do not touch anyone on the head
  • Stay calm; anger causes loss of face
