Getting Around Phuket

Taxis and ride-hailing cover most routes; scooters are popular but require caution and a valid licence.

Getting Around Phuket

Overview

Phuket is larger than many visitors expect. Distances between beaches add up, and hills slow travel. Grab and Bolt operate widely and are often cheaper than unmetered taxis. Agree taxi fares before short hops in Patong if not using an app.

Songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) run along main west-coast routes for budget travel. Car hire suits families and those staying a week or more; drive on the left and watch for motorbikes.

Scooters are everywhere but accident rates are high. Wear a helmet, check travel insurance covers riding, and avoid riding if inexperienced. Police occasionally check licences.

Key Tips

  • Grab works well in Patong, Kata and Phuket Town
  • Patong to Old Town: about 30–40 minutes by car
  • Scooter hire from roughly 200–300 THB/day
  • Peak-hour traffic is worst 4–7 PM
